A killer flu season has seen almost as many people diagnosed with the virus so far this year as there were in the whole of 2018. Described as one of the worst flu epidemics ever, 50,000 people have been struck down already. Dr Richard Kidd, chair of the Australian Medical Association Council of General Practice said that up to 4,000 people could die from the killer flu this year.
For cancer patients the risk is even greater. Your immune system will be weakened by cancer and treatments putting patients at higher risk of serious and even life-threatening problems if they get the flu.
it’s IMPORTANT to consult with your medical team BEFORE being vaccinated. Plan your flu shot during your treatment cycle when your blood cell counts are near normal, not when they are at their lowest. For Lymphoedema with arm problems, there is always the butt!!
Friends, caregivers and family, including children, should also get the influenza vaccine so that they will not pass it on to you.
