Slippery when wet

Staying upright can be no easy fete, especially on the wet Autumn days. It is important for cancer patients to be constantly aware of the dangers of slippery surfaces and to learn to walk safely especially on wet footpaths and slippery paving/tiles. Beware of slippery Autumn leaves that form a slick surface increasing the danger of a slip and fall.

Avoid boots or shoes with smooth soles and heels, such as plastic and leather soles. Instead, wear shoes with rubber soles for added traction. When the ground is slippery it is a good idea to use a walker or cane for added stability.

TIP: Wear a heavy, bulky coat that will cushion you if you should fall.

Bones weakened from metastatic cancer can break or fracture. Even minor falls can result in broken bones. It is extremely important for the patient to take special care.

Slow down, take care and if you do fall let your medical team and your caregivers know. They might need to check you for injuries.
